AEGEE-Eskişehir: Statement regarding the military coup and the political situation in Turkey

On the first day of this year’s AEGEE-Eskişehir’s Summer University crEATe the peace with your heART an event of turkish-national importance happened: the military’s coup d’état attempt. A week later AEGEE-Eskişehir released the following statement (Turkish version below):

The past week was one of the most horrible within Turkey’s history. Exactly one week ago, July 15, tanks rolled down the streets of Istanbul and Ankara, soldiers marched down on all of us, and fighter jets where send into the skies – all in order to intimidate the peoples of Turkey. A minority within our armed forces had decided to remove the democratically-elected government of Turkey. Even though, many of our members are not happy with the current situation, we strongly condemn the attempt to violently overthrow Turkey’s government – military coups have no place in a modern democratic society. In response to the coup, tens of thousands of supporters of our president marched through the streets in order to halt the coup. In the violence that followed, hundreds lost their lives. We ask you to join us in mourning the 294 individuals that died during this violence. Currently, our president has used the failure of the coup to remove thousands of people from the government. Over 10.000 people have been arrested and over 50.000 have lost their job. Both the coup-attempt and our president’s purge that followed it have done little to improve democracy, human rights, minority rights, or good-governance. As AEGEE-Eskisehir, we always stressed the importance of these rights and we have used civic and non-formal educational tools in order spread awareness of these rights. As such, it saddens us to see the current state of affairs in Turkey. Additionally, as the focus is on Ankara and our president, it should not be forgotten that we share our country with almost three million refugees that need all the help they can possibly get, and that there is a war going in our Southeastern regions which have turned an additional 500.000 people into refugees and killed over 1.700 people.
We hope for a better and safer future in which human rights are upheld, freedoms guaranteed, minority rights sustained, and democracy prevails.

Geçtiğimiz haftalar Türkiye tarihindeki en zor günlerdi. Tam olarak bir hafta önce, Temmuz ayının 15’inde, tanklar Ankara ve İstanbul’da yollarda geziyor, askerler düzenli adımlarla yürüyor ve jetler Türk halkına gözdağı vermek için havalanıyordu. Ordumuzda bulunan belli bir azınlık demokrasi yoluyla seçilmiş hükümeti devirme kararı almıştı. Her ne kadar çoğumuz mevcut durumdan hoşnut olmasakta, Türkiye’nin hükümetine karşı yapılmış olan bu şiddetli devirme girişimini kınıyoruz. Bu tarz askeri darbelerin, modern demokratik toplumlarda yeri yoktur. Darbeye karşılık vermek üzere, on binlerce hükümet yanlısı sokaklarda yürüyüşlere katılmıştır. Bunun sonucunda meydana gelen arbedede, yüzlerce kişi hayatını kaybetmiştir. Sizlerden hayatlarını kaybeden 294 vatandaşımızın yasını hep beraber tutmaya çağırıyoruz.
Şu anda, Sayın Cumhurbaşkanımız başarısızlıkla sonuçlanan bu darbe girişimini hükümet içerisinde bulunan binlerce insanı işinden almak için kullanmıştır. 10.000’den fazla insan tutuklanmış ve 50.000’den fazla insan işinden alınmıştır. Hem bu darbe girişimi hem de Sayın Cumhurbaşkanımız Recep Trayyip Erdoğan’ın tasfiyeleri ne demokrasiye ne insan haklarına ne azınlık haklarına ne de iyi bir yönetime en ufak bir katkı sağlamıştır. AEGEE-Eskişehir olarak, biz her zaman bu hakların önemine vurgu yapmaya ve bu hakların farkındalığını sivil ve örgün olmayan eğitim yollarıyla vurgulamaya çalıştık. Ama sözün özü, Türkiye’nin güncel gidişatı bizi üzüyor. Ayrıca, odağın Ankara ve Sayın Cumhurbaşkanımızın üzerinde olduğu şu günlerde, ülkemizi paylaştığımız yaklaşık üç milyon mülteciye ihtiyaçları olan bütün desteğin sağlanması gerektiğinin ve ülkemizin Güneydoğu bölgelerinde devam etmekte olan savaşın ilaveten 500.000 mülteci ve 1.700 insanın ölümüyle sonuçlandığının unutulmaması gerekiyor.
İnsan haklarının idame edildiği, özgürlüğün garantiye alındığı, azınlık haklarının korunduğu ve demokrasinin egemen olduğu daha iyi ve daha güvenli bir gelecek dileğiyle.
